What is Yoga?

Yoga means to unite the body, mind and soul.

Yoga is an ancient art, science and philosophy. The postures we practice in class (Asana) are a small part of Yoga philosophy, which is a method to ease suffering and achieve enlightenment.

Yoga has many physical and mental benefits. It promotes balance, flexibility, strength and inner peace.

Whatever the reason you come to yoga, it should be fun, non-competitive and safe. We believe that any contact with the teachings of yoga can improve life. “As honey is sweet from any part of the honeycomb, so is yoga” (BKS Iyengar, 1993. Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali).

About Janelle

Janelle Cornwell PhD., ERYT 200, RYT 500, has been practicing yoga since 1998 in a variety of styles, but her in-depth training is in a classical approach to the Eight Limbs of Yoga in the tradition of BKS Iyengar. She earned her 200-hour Teacher Certification in 2008 with Eileen Muir at Karuna Center for Yoga and the Healing Arts. In 2020, She completed a 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training at Karuna with Paul Menard. Janelle’s background and brief career as a ballet dancer informs her physical approach to yoga.

Experience and Motivation

Janelle’s motivation to study yoga more deeply and share it with others comes from the peace that she finds in the practice. She has been teaching yoga since 2008, and directed Cherry Valley Yoga from 2019-2021, specializing in supported yoga for people with mobility issues, obesity and arthritis. She earned her PhD. in Geography in 2011 and taught for several years at Worcester State University in a full and part time capacity before moving to Venice.

Yoga with Janelle

About Carolyn

Carolyn Rubin is a former swimmer and was an avid runner in college. She came to yoga for its physical benefits of strength, balance and a desire to increase her lung capacity for efficient cardiovascular workouts. When her first husband was diagnosed with cancer in September 2001 on the heels of 9/11, yoga and meditation became a sanctuary and she began to study its ancient philosophy and healing benefits. In 2008 she completed in a 200-hour training at Kirpalu Center for Yoga and Health and in 2011, she completed an additional 200-hour teacher training with Mimi Loureiro & Elliot McEdowney from O2 Yoga. In the fall of 2019, she attended a 75-hour training for experienced teachers led by Schuyler Grant, founder of Kula Yoga.

Motivation

Carolyn is a self-proclaimed eternal student. Her hope is that breath by breath she can inspire others to work on becoming the best version of themselves. “We build both mental and physical strength by honing our skills of concentration, focus and present moment awareness on the mat. How blessed we are to also be able to work on compassion, patience and understanding of ourselves so we can bring these same benevolent qualities into our daily lives.”

Her classes are a blend of strength and surrender, weaving breath and movement into a meditative flow that encourages students to explore what brings them back to their mat again and again.

The main entrance to the studio is in the front of the building. However, when the parking lot is busy, we like to park in the back as a courtesy to neighboring businesses whose entrances are only in the front. People with physical challenges and private clients should park in the front and enter through the front door.

Please remove your shoes as you enter the studio.

When I practice I am a philosopher, when I teach I am a scientist and when I demonstrate, I am an artist. BKS. Iyengar
